Yeh so my mage is 70 now and the fool has just on 6.1k hp. He's going to be a PVE'er so I'm about to replace my green gloves and belt with the Spellfire Gloves and Belt of Blasting (if I can find someone who can craft it) respectively. Both items seriously lack stam, and I'll be gimping my hp further.

So how have you IV mages managed to get ur stam up to the lofty 8k+ levels Shocked? Please don't tell me PVP is the only way?

I'm way too squishy and die all the time when AOE damage is involved or when shit hits the fan.

Thanks.

Time to lewt wh0re Kara then.

Now I remember having had the same issues with Beef's Moonkin PVE set in the beginning. Spamming Kara helped with that a lot.

Depends on how intent you are on gearing him and min/maxing so to speak. A lot of gear such as spellstrike, belt of blasting etc all have a minmax nature to them, you get a lot of damage/hit/crit and not as many stats and a lot of people like that, if you soley plan on PVEing with him and really want to push his stats they are a great option, however there is the other option of taking heroic pieces and kara pieces for a much more balanced stat base, you will not do the damage you could do in these other pieces but you will have far more stam and to a lesser extent, int. Also, if you do choose the spellstrike/spellfire/belt of blasting route, 1 way to be safe is to carry at least a half pvp set for any fights where surviving is more difficult and just chop and change your gear up for the situation.

tldr version: In short, if you just plan to do some casual pve (5 mans, heroics, kara) type stuff with him, you really don't need to push the envelope in the min/max fashion that a lot of hardcore people do. If you're more comfortable with more hp and less damage that's fine, however at these levels it is a trade off and you do have to choose one or the other.

In the long term I intend to hop on the badge train and just grab the stuff off there. I'm not a real fan of the spellfire set coz of the stats but I'll probably wear the robe or gloves if I can craft them and I dont have enough badges for the badge equivalents yet. I did get the belt of Blasting crafted though, to be my first epic. Was actually cheaper for me to make then the Spellfire belt (just got Beef to fork over the 30 badges for the 2 Nether Vortex).

If I can get myself some patience, I'll PVP for perhaps the vindicator's ring and S2 weapon for a bit more Stam as well.

In the short term my primary focus is on building my spell hit and damage at the same time, pity my raw spell damage figure is low but I'm building up a nice amount of hit to compensate. Should have scryer's bloodgem soon.

Oh and yes, I only really intend to do heroics/10 mans at most.... with the occasional 25 man. Who knows what the future brings though Smile

Yeah hit point for point will give you more DPS raiding than crit or spell damage until capped so it's definitely a good first stat to concentrate on, although for heroic pugs/kara pugs all you really have to do to get into them are stack spell damage, as it's all anyone is interested in Razz

Exactly. I'd get more +hit on my gear but I need the spell damage figure for pure bragging rights Razz

I have enough hit rating to be capped If i respecced to arcane, however the popular thinking seems to be I need 2xT5 for the set bonus in order for arcane to be viable. Oh, and a shadow priest in your group Razz

That thinking is indeed correct, again if you're not worried about your DPS so much and just enjoy the spec it's fine, but it certainly won't perform without 2t5. Frost has less hit than fire as well, due to some bug with a fire and frost hit talent that does double for frost or something of the like, I can't quite remember from back when I played a mage.

Yeh according to wowwiki, assuming the correct talents have been picked up, the hit caps for the specs are:

Fire, Frost (unbugged) - 164
Frost (bugged) - 126
Arcane - 76

I picked up some sweet drops from norm MgT last night, so my spell hit is now 118. Getting there.

Enjoying the mage class thoroughly, despite the obvious issues Very Happy

keep yer stam to a minimum 7.5k (better 8k) unbuffed

otherwise AOE bosses will pwn your butt, and there's nothing healers can do to save j000!!!!

btw 2 DPS in slabs was pretty good last nite eh? was a funny run!

Quit yer whining.

700+dmg and 50+ hit in pvp gear and blues and I can still keep up.

If your not going to pvp, dont worry about stam once you reach around 7.5k hp mark unbuffed.

Well I did have a perve at Cecepel's spec and I'm considering trying it out. A nice mix of talents there to boost overall damage and make me feel less like a '1 trick pony' like deep fire makes me feel like at the moment.

What rotation do you use? Or is it a secret like the KFC 11 herbs and spices?

Last time we were in Kara and I died very early I just watched u scorch spam with the occasional AB thrown in... but at the time couldnt establish a pattern...

Well it really depends on what kind of damage is required.

On long boss fights, I'll usually go with scorch spam to get the debuffs up, and then fireballs on clearcast procs. I'll also throw in a arcane blast now and then, and then use a second arcane blast if I get a clearcast proc in the buff time (the speed and mana cost increase).

On burst damage fights (trash etc) - i'll go with scorch spam, work fireblast into the rotation during cooldowns, and if really needed, blow arcane power, trinket and spam arcane blast like no tomorrow (absolute shitloads of damage with bloodlust etc up - but you will be oom within 20 secs).

When we were fighting NB, I didn't have improved fireball, so scorch spam was my best option - however with the right spec I'll scorch spam and then use fireball during clearcasts and intervals.

The thing with fire is that you need lots of crit to be effective. Cece may not have alot of +dmg, but he has around 33% crit self buffed - which makes up for the pitiful damage.
